Planit Meetings offers preferred rates at many luxury hotels in cities across the US. A favorite hotel, where we offer the lowest rates, is the urbane and luxurious Sofitel, a four-star hotel across historic Lafayette Square from the White House. The decor is exquisite -- a modern take on Art Deco.
The hotel offers a respite, from the stress of life...spacious rooms, 24-hour room service, L'Occitane bath products, separate bathtub and shower, in marble bathrooms, a fitness center offering any equipment that anyone would want.
We especially love the hotel because of its unobtrusive, outstanding service, from knowledgeable and generous helpfulness by the entire hotel staff, who anticipate needs, and offer the little things and services, that you don't even know you need...the little touches, like the lemons for your tea, coming in little muslin bags. ... This hotel is an oasis, civil, comfortable, gorgeous, quiet, in the heart of Washington.
ici Urban Bistro, the Sofitel's restaurant, is a hidden gem, chic, but not intimidating restaurant that offers French bistro comfort food, Zagat rated, trendy...What we love is that the restaurant is quiet enough to converse with dining or bar companions, without straining to listen or be heard...Yet it's in the heart of the city...

Planit Meetings supports Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue
Here at Planit Meetings -- the proud hotel hosts of National Police Week 2012 -- , we believe in giving back to the community. Planit Meetings is a supporter of Proverbs12:10 Animal Rescue, a small 501(c)3 animal rescue organization, that serves a rural area outside of Nashville, Tennessee. Planit Meetings maintains their blog, does pro bono grant-writing for them, searches for Nashville area sponsors for them, and gives a portion of any hotel reservation commission made with the mention of Proverbs 12:10 to them, so they can continue and expand their work of helping abandoned animals, taking care of animals for people who cannot afford their expenses, and rescuing fine dogs and cats from kill shelters.
Please spread the word....If a person makes any hotel reservations, and mentions Proverbs Animal Rescue, Planit Meetings gives back, to the rescue, a portion of any earned commission, in the guest's name.
Please visit Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue blog, and their website:

C & O Canal Lockhouses: a Wonderful Getaway Any Time of Year
![]() |
C & O Canal Lockhouse 6, in Bethesda, MD |
Canal Quarters, through the C & O Canal Trust, offers some of
the restored, equipped lockhouses, on the C & O Canal, for rent, for about
$100 per night. The C & O Canal Towpath starts in Cumberland, Maryland, and ends, some 184 scenic miles later, in Georgetown, in Washington, DC.
Many of the lockhouses along the way have been restored to their 19th century orgins , and can be rented, for $100 per day or less. Most have enough beds (including trundle beds) to accommodate 4 - 6 people. Some are heated for the winter, have indoor plumbing. Others are more rustic. Lockhouse 6, in Bethesda, Maryland, is furnished the way it may have been in the 1950s, to tell the story of Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas' campaign to preserve the canal and turn it into a National Park.
To check availability and reserve your stay, go to www.canaltrust.org/quarters/
Last winter, friends and I did a part of the Canal above Williamsport, and stayed at Lockhouse 49. The towpath in the winter is uncrowded, and with the leaves gone from trees, the vistas were more visible...beautiful...with so much wildlife... It did not feel like we were a short distance away from DC. Try it with friends or family. You would not be disappointed...hiking, or biking....Also, if you're looking for a romantic getaway, one of the lockhouses would be it! ... One more thing....in the winter, there is more availability... Because the lockhouses are so well-built, in the winter, they're not cold, without heat.

Hotel Travel with Pets
These days, more and more hotels are pet friendly, but that does not necessarily make it easy, on the pet, or you, to travel with pets.
If you’re
facing a long flight, like from New York to Seattle, consider Pet Airways, a
pets only airline. Go to www.petairways.comfor rates, and schedules. Planit Meetings loves Pet Airways, because they
transport rescue dogs, to new homes, at a 50% or more discount, flying standby.
![]() |
Romeo |
After you’ve
made your hotel reservation, call the hotel’s front desk, to request a quiet
room, on a low floor, and also ask them to send via U.S. Mail, a printed copy
of their pet policy. (Also, ask for a corner room, usually the best rooms, away
from the elevator.)
Consider
staying
at a Kimpton Hotel. All Kimptons have always been dog-welcoming, with
no pet fees, no pound limitations, or other restrictions. Further, the
Kimpton
Hotels, world-wide, offer great pet amenities, and even in-room dog
massages
and grooming, and complimentary dog-walking, at some Kimptons. Planit
Meetings’
favorite pet-friendly budget hotel is the Red Roof Inn (but not all Red
Roof
Inns are pet-friendly, so call ahead). Their no-frills, no carpeting and
upholstery rooms allow better cleaning...as in no carpeting for the
inevitable dog-accident.
If you’re
planning sightseeing, with your dog staying in his/her room, for long periods
of time, consider doggie day care, for your pup, for some of the days, of your
trip. Also consider putting off your dog’s grooming, for your vacation. Many
groomers offer pick-up and drop-off; while you’re sight-seeing, your pup will
be getting a necessary chore, out of the way, and will not be stuck in the
hotel room all day, while you’re out exploring.
Learn where
the city’s dog parks, pet-friendly cafes, good walking trails, are, before you
travel. Hotel concierges are a great source of information. If the concierge at
the hotel, where you will be staying, doesn’t know, call another hotel in the
same zip code, and ask that hotel’s concierge.
Locate in
advance the city’s vet E.R.
It goes
without saying, even though restaurants and other establishments frequently
have dog bowls by their door, bring your own collapsible water bowl. With most
CVS stores carrying dog food, and other supplies, traveling with all your dog’s
supplies is not the necessity that it once was, but do not forget an extra
leash, and make sure the dog tags are secure on your dog’s collar.
Finally, as
much as you love your dog, and how much you miss your dog, when you’re away,
consider your dog first. Perhaps keeping your dog at home, with a very good pet-sitter, in your home. Recently,
a Planit Meetings’ colleague, her family and their pet went to a lovely pet-friendly
inn, for a long weekend. The dog did not get along with the inn-keepers’ dog,
and further, picked up a skin-irritant, hiking
in the woods and fields near the inn, necessitating a couple of vet visits
after.
For Planit Meetings clients who travel to the Washington, DC area with their dogs, Planit Meetings offers complimentary pet care, and dog walking.

Inn at Levelfields/ Calm Waters Rowing, Lancaster, Virginia
Entre nous:

At 125 per night,
including a sumptuous breakfast for two (the smell of homemade biscuits, clafutti,
Virginia ham, wafted upstairs to wake me up every morning), it was perfect for
our budget. We were the only guests staying there, so my friend and were put up
in the honeymoon suite, that featured its own private balcony. (If I ever got married again, this is where I'd want to have my wedding.) ... Our room was huge, had high ceilings, lots of light, yet it felt cozy. By day, we hiked along the river, and explored antique shops, and local restaurants; in the evening, we read in Inn's parlor, and vegged out a bit.
Inn at Levelfields
owners Charlotte Hollings and John Dunn bought the Inn about 13 years ago,
primarily as a place for rowers, but operate a superlative Inn, during the
winter months. Rowing is their passion…both John and Charlotte are world
champion medaled rowers, who coached in college, before starting Calm Waters,
and their Inn.
Since we were the
only guests at the Inn, we enjoyed having drinks with Charlotte and John, who
not only gave us some pointers for better work out regimens, that do not
involve going to the gym, but also filled us in on the Civil War history of the
Inn and surrounding area.
I am almost never
this excited or impressed with an inn or bed and breakfast, that I have to share
with Planit Meetings clients… but…the Inn at Levelfields was just that
wonderful.

Georgetown University Graduation 2012, Thursday, May 17 - Sunday, May 20
Hoya Saxa to Georgetown families from a Georgetown parent! Having been through undergrad graduation recently, and expect to be rejoicing during a grad school graduation, in about two years, Planit Meetings and I can personally help you through the four days of graduation events, that commence with the Senior Convo on Thursday, and end with Baccalaureate Mass, followed by a good brunch, and finally, the law school's graduation, on Sunday.
The George Washington University's graduation weekend is the same dates as Georgetown -- May 17 - May 20, so be prepared for partying, parents, families, cars, crowds all over Georgetown and the West End of town (and gridlock on the bridges), re: graduation weekend...
The four days of graduation events are poignant, with emotions hitting you everywhere...as in rejoicing, with the parent goal of launching being fulfilled, but a bit of sadness, as in time marches on and our kids march away, worry about our kids and the economy. Further, it can get exhausting.
But, about graduation, Washington is humid in May, more humid than you remember, and it will be hot by then. Consider all the outdoor activities, and receptions on the lawn, and some in tents, that all the bottles of water being handed out everywhere on campus, will not mitigate.
Whether you're coming to DC for all four days of events, or just the commencement ceremony, Planit Meetings is here for you...re: getting you the lowest hotel rates, at the best hotels, for graduation, and helping you take care of your family's needs, when you're in Washington. We live and work here, a few blocks from the GU campus, in fact, and know the city, and the hotels, and parking and all that.
For Georgetown University families, who use Planit Meetings' for graduation hotel reservations, we offer complimentary child care (or grandparent watching) and or pet-sitting. We will make your dinner reservations, and guide you through any pratfall or issue during the four days of graduation.
Don't hesitate to email us about our services for Georgetown's graduation or questions: susan@planitmeetings.com (Please mention GU's graduation, when you email us.)
Reservations are not prepaid, and can be canceled without penalty, until the day prior to arrival.
And yes, the senior ball is very fun, and very worth attending, even for parents.

Hotel Colorado, Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Teddy Roosevelt Bedroom |

Jim reading Grisham |

Julie's and Jim's report:
We love the Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. We just spent a three-day weekend there in the Teddy Roosevelt suite overlooking the garden, which was covered in golden elm leaves. TR’s last visit was in 1903, and his room has been preserved to honor him. the hotel itself was built in 1893 and retains a quality of service predating World War I in its luxurious furniture, carpeting, and fixtures, but also in the personal attention guests receive from the well-trained and conscientious staff. There is a comfortable bar and beautiful restaurant both filled with beautiful things from La Belle Epoque (1890-1914), like Art Nouveau statue lamps by Moreau and comfortable, period dining furniture.
The front lobby is enormous and filled with large, over-stuffed chairs and sofas placed upon oriental carpets, and where one is warmed by two huge fireplaces which in cold weather are always aglow with crackling cedar logs burning in the high-ceiling rooms, where Victorian draperies swirl over very tall windows in an atmosphere of great comfort, where anyone would feel at home. There is also a beautiful grand piano in the lobby, where one can often hear soft music being played during the evening.
A few steps from the hotel is the largest natural hot spring spa in the world, where there are two very large pools fed by the hot spring and by another natural spring to cool the water in one pool down to 104 degrees and the other down to 90 degrees. The spa water is filled with healthy minerals and is wonderfully invigorating almost any time, except for the four days a year the spa is not open. We spent hours lounging in the 90-degree pool and only a few minutes in the 104-degree pool. Muscular aches disappear in the waters, and during WWII, the hotel was filled with wounded soldiers who were sent there to enjoy the spa during rehabilitation. This made the best off-season getaway.
Prices were low, the entire hotel looked very clean, service was unobtrusive, but helpful. The surroundings were beautiful. Rates are high during ski season, and summer season, but everything --restaurant included, was reasonable, affordable (in this economy!!).
We'd return in a flash. http://hotelcolorado.com/
